Dungeon Runners Producer and Lead Programmer, Stephen Nichols, indicated today that they are shutting down the game on January 1, 2010. While that’s the bad news for those who play the game, the good news is this:
I think we’ve come up with a nice package for all players with paid memberships as of today (9/16/2009). You’ll be getting a 30 day game time serial code and digital copies of City of Heroes Architect Edition and Guild Wars Prophecies. FREE games FTW! I know, it’s not Dungeon Runners… but it’s still frigging nice! Of course, any of you guys that need refunds for multiple-month membership purchases will be taken care of. And, as always, our helpful support staff will be available to help you with any issues you have.
Wait, there’s even more good news! While we may be going out, we’re going out in style, with a few changes to the game for the coming “End Time”. Mythic loot will drop much more frequently. We’re significantly reducing the cost of expensive King’s Coin vendors. We’re also quintupling the rate of XP gain to help you finish the game before year’s end! Finally, we’re adding a huge nuke to Townston that will blow up on New Year’s and take the game down with it. There’s more, but what fun is there in spilling all the beans? Oh, its gonna be a fun time till the end of the year! Loot finding, leveling madness.
They’ve pushed out a patch today that should make playing a little more exicitng. Here are the changes from the patch notes:
- You’ll notice a large bomb in Townston. Don’t panic. It’s only timed to destroy the game just after midnight on January 1, 2010. Happy new years!
- All XP gains have been increased by a factor of 5. Enjoy your rapid leveling!
- The chance for a mythic item to drop from a creature has doubled.
- The chance that rainbow Sam and Sally will show up in the dungeon has been increased to 100%. Their KC costs have been reduced significantly.
- The chance that an item will be members-only has been decreased to 50% for all item qualities.
- The Wishing Well’s repeat timer has been reduced to 30 minutes. It also generates two items per pull. We’ve also added many new items to the well.
- The chance to get a King’s Coin award from a PvP match has been increased to 100% regardless of the match length. Also, winning a match will give you 10 KCs while losing will net 5 KCs.
- The chance that your Bling Gnome will poop out a nice item has been massively increased.
So hurry up and try this game out and see what its all about before it goes bye-bye.

If you’re looking for your Diablo 3 fix and just can’t wait for its release, perhaps Dungeon Runners will entertain you for awhile. Its been over two years since I first took a look at Dungeon Runners and it was fun to jump back in for an hour or two today and run through some dungeons.
Dungeon Runners is a Free-to-play RPG with instanced dungeons similar to Guild Wars and Diablo. And while you won’t find an overarching story, the game’s humor, and singular focus on dungeon crawling tends to make up for it.
Launched in 2007 by NCsoft, the game continues to provide a home for those looking for light-hearted fare. This is a fantasy game where you can play as a mage, archer or fighter. The maximum level is 100 and rather than having access to just your primary class-based skills you can choose skills from the other two classes as well. Rather than being handed a fixed platter of skills when you level up, you buy them from trainers and pay gold to upgrade them so they become more powerful.
As you kill critters you will gather gold and loot ranging from the mundane vendor trash to “rainbow tagged” items representing some of the most powerful weapons and armor in the game. You also collect “King’s Coins” as you complete quests which you can trade in for a random item for your class.
When you get tired of fighting in PVE, the game also offers PVP. Everyone plays as a level 101 character and your stats are adjusted upward to even everything out. Like Diablo, and virtually every other RPG these days, the game is focused on loot collection to make your avatar as strong as possible.
While the game is free-to-play, it also offers a monthly subscription. Becoming a member for $5 a month gives you access to better loot and more XP, King’s Coins and bank storage. If you must have the best stuff and want to play competitively you will want to become a member. But check it out, you might find the awesome humor and fast paced gameplay to be a great way to spend a few hours.
You can find the game on the Dungeon Runners website. They also have an active community forum you can visit. Check out this gameplay video on YouTube:
