Underworlds is an RPG for the iPhone that plays a lot like Diablo. Your adventure begins by choosing from two different male and two different female avatars. Give your chosen avatar a name, choose from four different difficulties and you find yourself standing in the woods in front of McTavish. He’ll have you start your killing spree by dispatching an orc. Kill the orc and McTavish will open a portal so you can quickly travel to a pub where your real adventure begins.
As you slay the denizens inhabiting the Underworlds you’ll gain experience, gold, potions and gear. The quality of drops range from “white/gray” (mundane) colored tags to “gold” (legendary) tags which representing their worth.

When you level up you can spend points to upgrade your stats and feats. With a maximum level of 10 you won’t be upgrading a lot, but the choices you see here will have you slaying everything in Extreme mode with little difficulty and without having to chug many potions. You will find that the gear you collect and equip has more effect on your ability to slay the evil denizens.

Defender Chronicles is a great RPG / Tower Defense game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. You play the role of a hero who is either a sword-slinging “General” or a wand-waving mage. Your objective is to place “guilds”, synonymous with “towers”, to block, attack and keep the evil horde from making it through the map.
These “guilds” represent classic RPG fantasy characters you are likely familiar with such as archers, rangers, mages, warriors, berserkers, and halfling rogues which you place in predetermined spots.

You can upgrade each guild five times. Some guilds such as the Rangers are “unlocked” after upgrading Archers five times.
The game starts out simple with “Novice” mode where your strategies and gear are non-essential to “Legend” difficulty where using upgraded gear and precise timing of guild placement are paramount to winning.
As you play each map you will gain experience and tokens. Your experience is represented as classic RPG levels and you earn experience points that you can allocate to make your hero and your guilds stronger. Your tokens are used for buying gear, potions and spells.

As of version 1.2.2, there are currently seven different maps to play with each offering a unique challenge.

When you get tired of playing the General hero you can switch to the Elf Priestess and begin leveling her up. The ability to share money and items between both heroes is awesome.
If you do not like “grinding”, this game may not be for you as it will likely take between 200-300 hours to level each hero to the maximum level of 400. You will also find out that the higher difficulty levels require you to play the “luck of the draw” game where you are continually refreshing the store contents looking for item upgrades that are nearly essentially for winning the maps. But if your luck with random number generators is at all like mine you may be in for a long wait to get the “best gear”.
The game is fun and if you like roleplaying elements as well as tower defense games, Defender Chronicles – Legend of the Desert King delivers.
Defender Chronicles is available on the AppStore
